Malaria Campaign
To prevent, treat and contain
malaria
|
One net
equals one life.
The Northeastern Iowa Synod joins the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America and African companion churches in a global
effort to prevent, treat and contain malaria by 2015.
The simplest and most effective
preventive measure is the usage of mosquito nets. One $10 net
prevents the death of one person. One net equals one life.
The ELCA
has asked the Northeastern Iowa Synod to serve as a pilot synod
for the campaign, which seeks to raise $15 million to save the
lives of 1.5 million children.

Report:
Rise in anti-malaria funding is paying off
New drugs, vaccines and technologies will be enlisted within a
few years in the global fight against malaria as a result of
the increase in funding for research of the disease since the
1990s, according to a recent report released by the Program
for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) in conjunction
with Roll Back Malaria.

Synod sets goal to
raise $250,000
in gifts and pledges
The 2011 Assembly of the Northeastern Iowa Synod passed a
resolution that the people of the Northeastern Iowa Synod of the
ELCA commit to join in the ELCA Malaria Campaign and step out in
faith to raise $250,000 over a three-year period to fight
against malaria. That is $250,000 for 25,000 nets to save 25,000
lives.

The synod is almost halfway toward
reaching that goal with more than $105,000 in cash and pledges
already collected, including $21,621 in gifts and pledges from
participants of the synod assembly in June.
Please take time to learn more about Malaria, the ELCA Malaria
Campaign, and how congregations and members of the Northeastern
Iowa Synod can have a leadership role in supporting it. |

A Gift to a Mother
A gift is being sent to
A mother in a third world country.
The gift is not glamorous, luxurious, soft, silky or satiny,
But it will bring this mother great comfort and peace of mind.
It is the ultimate security blanket.
It is a mosquito net.
A woman who has very little
will receive the comfort
Of sleeping peacefully because
She knows that her children
are safe from the bites
Of malaria-infected mosquitoes.
They will not suffer or die needlessly.
This gift will surround
her family in an
Envelope of safety, comfort,
and peace.
