A Mission Trip of Learning:  Mexico

This was not a typical mission trip where we rolled up our sleeves and worked.  It was not the type of experience where one would bring gifts or mission tools or materials.  These missionaries went go neither for tourism nor for building houses.  We didn't work to convert but to walk in accompaniment."  The purpose of this trip was to see, experience, live, smell, touch, be touched, and  be opened to the myriad of ministries of our church and beyond...and to be prepared to share what we experienced with others.  This was a mission of learning so that others might learn from us.  Our goal is to return to Iowa and let our neighbors know the importance of mission and outreach in all areas of our church...we need their support so that ministry in all realms of the church can flourish and grow. Each synod conference was invited to nominate a high school student to travel to Mexico with Rev. Diane Dardón, UNI campus pastor; Rev. Mark Anderson; and, several college students to learn about the global mission of the Evangelical Lutheran church in America.  Accommodations and some programming will be provided by the Lutheran Center in Mexico City.  The immersion program challenges and empowers participants to become advocates and promoters of the church's mission.
