CELEBRATING RENEWAL: JOHANNES BUGENHAGEN, PARISH PASTOR
OF THE REFORMATION

The 2021 Northeastern Iowa Synod Assembly is scheduled to gather at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, June 11-13, with the theme “Celebrating Renewal: Johannes Bugenhagen, Parish Pastor of the Reformation.”

The election of a Bishop will be the primary business on Friday and Saturday. In addition to the Bishop election, voting members will elect a synod secretary, synod council members and nominating committee.

Plans also include designated time to honor 50 years of women being ordained in the ELCA and the impact the ordination of women has had on the ministry of the church.

BISHOP ELECTION PROCESS

The Northeastern Iowa Synod uses an ecclesiastical ballot for the election of the Bishop, which means there are no verbal or written nominations made in advance of the first ballot.

At the Assembly, voting members will write on the first ballot the name of an eligible minister of Word and Sacrament of the ELCA. That ballot is considered a nominating ballot, and everyone who receives a vote is listed on the second ballot, except for those who withdraw. The number of nominees decreases on subsequent ballots until one nominee receives the required majority of votes. (See box.)
