Wholly Iowa Youth Leadership Discipling Event

July 23-25, 2021
Camp Ewalu, Strawberry Point

WIYLDE, the Wholly Iowa Youth Leadership Discipling Event for high school youth, is back this year at a new location with new adventures.

Set for July 23 to 25, the event will take place at Ewalu Bible Camp near Strawberry Point with the theme, “Leading in the WIYLDE.”

WIYLDE is an annual camp for high school youth of ELCA congregations in Iowa to learn how to become future leaders of the church. This year’s WIYLDE will focus on leadership skills that students can use in their congregation and beyond. Even though it’s only a weekend, there will still be large group teaching times, small group discussions, games and campfires.

The event will follow the same COVID precautions and guidelines that Ewalu will have in place for summer camp. Details about the precautions and safety measures will be sent out closer to the event so that the most recent and up-to-date measures will be in place. Face masks will still be required.

  • Arrive at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 23. Dinner will not be provided.
  • Closing worship is at 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 25. Parents are encouraged to attend.
  • Everyone will leave at 11:45 a.m. July 25. Lunch will not be provided.

Registration is open through July 15.

The $60 registration fee includes lodging, meals, and a T-shirt. Congregations are encouraged to contribute $30 toward that fee.

Questions can be directed to Deb Bachman, youth coordinator for the Northeastern Iowa Synod.

Middle school students joined the closing session of 2019 WIYLDE

Fifteen middle school students joined the closing session of the 2019 WIYLDE to get a taste of what WIYLDE is like. This is the first year that younger students were able to experience their own “Junior WIYLDE.”

The annual Wholly Iowa Youth Leadership Discipling Event (WIYLDE) is designed to help high school youth learn skills to become future leaders of the church. The three-day event featured the theme “Walking WIYLDE,” which focused on the affirmation of baptismal promises.

High school students led the middle school youth through four stations of games, Bible study, and prayer. This group-building session gave the WIYLDE high school students an opportunity to practice their leadership skills, and the middle school students gained a first-hand introduction to WIYLDE activities.
